Many of you mentioned religion and/or spirituality in your summer identity writing. The above link will take you to a discussion of teens and spirituality. One of the speakers is Christian Smith author of Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers. Some of you may want to do some research on this text to see if it fits with your project.

Does setting matter? Please follow the link above and read the article in its entirety. Consider how your life would be different if you lived in Iran. How has your identity been influenced by your setting. Of course you should respond to any part of the article that stands out for you. Are you the same person you were before you read this article? Did you change for a moment? Is there lasting change?

Many of you enjoyed “Mid-Term Break” so I thought you might want to use some Heaney poems for your Identity project. This site has recordings of poems as well as the text versions. Feel free to use other poetry sites as well. It may be helpful to copy the poem onto a page and then write your response using the guiding questions on the ‘How to Read’ page. Have fun!

THE LIST and THE LIST 2: First Long Work

September 19th, 2007

As you are selecting a long work for the first quarter, please read both lists. I am having some format issues, so I haven’t been able to blend the two lists. If you are selecting an author for your two long works of fiction, please read the page outlining the research for the long fiction pieces. Since blogs are collaborative, please consult with your colleagues when making your choice so that you can create a consultation group for yourself. [You can discuss ideas and observations, but you are not getting any type of group grade.] Add your group members to your blog roll. Once you have selected an author or a title, please post your choice by October 1 and title the post: First Quarter Reading Selection.

Getting Started – The Basics

September 10th, 2007

This is it–the blog for AP Literature! I hope you will enjoy maintaining your own blog. You are required to add to your blog each week. [This is a minimum requirement.] If you do not have computer access at home remember that the school library is open each school day until four o’clock. Additionally, the computers in our classroom are available to you during most studyhalls and each school day until at least 2:35. We will make regular class trips to the computer lab. [About once per month.]

The post section of the blog is for you to reflect on the process as a whole. Any time you do work for this project, please document your progress on your blog. This section should contain your personal musings as well as questions and ideas you would like to pose to your blog readers. If you add comments to others’ blogs, please keep in mind that this is not a social network! Your comments must be appropriate and positive and focused on the project and process.

Pages are different from posts. Please use your pages for your responses to specific reading assignments, interviews and other materials for your project. You will be documenting your sources using MLA format so please carefully document all sources. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/

After you have created your blog, start a page and then click on this link http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2838/is_n1_v32/ai_20610473 and read the article. Respond to the article using the questions and suggestions on the “How to Read” page of this blog. Next, create a post that explains the work that you did today so I can check your progess! Get started and enjoy!
