What creates your American identity?

As you may already know, the above question is the focus of our course. We will explore the people, events and circumstances that have contributed to your personality, beliefs and the world in which you live. You will be using an abundance of resources ranging from poetry from long ago to interviews that you conduct. You are required to record your activities, findings, resources and responses in a blog that I will check on a regular basis. The work you do for this project will be evaluated as part of your quarter grades. The final product will be the basis of your final exam grade for this course.

Let’s start with the most basic requirements. Using the reading list for this project you must select two long works of fiction by the same author. You must select one work current piece of nonfiction and one piece of nonfiction from the past.[In other words, one long work per quarter.] Additionally, you must select ten poems by at least three different poets as well as five short fiction pieces and five short nonfiction pieces per quarter. Discuss at least one significant personal experience that has given you insight into yourself and your identity. Furthermore you must include responses to three pieces of visual media. Finally, you must conduct at least three interviews.

You must use MLA format to document your resources so please keep a record of all pertinent information as part of your blog.

Personal response is an integral part of this process. You read a biography of Ben Franklin and he accomplished a lot of pretty nifty stuff. So what? How does his life’s work connect to the life you lead today? It takes interaction to make meaning from a text so please work on your active reading skills.
